Carbon Capture
Another initiative by Cosan in the energy field – which also includes environmental protection – is its entrance onto the Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) market (MDL), or carbon credits, created as of the beginning of the Kyoto Protocol. In 2005 the company entered into an anticipated carbon credit sale agreement. The project was approved by the UN (United Nations) and the credits were granted to Cosan.
The Serra unit, in Ibaté – SP, was equipped for that purpose and, as well as becoming self-sufficient in energy cogeneration, it also became an electric energy seller, making use of its carbon credits. In 2007, the unit traded around 34,000 MWh with countries that entered into the Kyoto Protocol, which corresponds to a reduction of 9,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere.
